Semester fall semester 2020
Course frequency Every fall sem.
Lecturers Kees de Hoogh (c.dehoogh@unibas.ch)
Marloes Eeftens (marloes.eeftens@unibas.ch)

Content Description: By means of lectures and accompanying practicals, basic principles of environmental epidemiology will be acquired. In the course we will deal with various examples of environmental exposures (air pollution, noise, ionizing and non-ionizing radiation, green space) that are relevant in the context of international and public health.

Content:
Study designs in environmental epidemiology
Principles of exposure assessment in epidemiology
Occupational exposure
Exposure assessment methods: personal measurements, fixed site measurements, spatial modelling, biomarker, job-exposure matrix, questionnaire
Validation of exposure assessment
Type of errors in exposure assessment
Effect of exposure assessment errors and the implications for study results
Non-ionizing and ionizing radiation
Ambient and indoor pollution, including passive smoking
Traffic noise
Regulation of environmental risks

Methods: Lectures and practicals
Learning objectives To understand the concept of environmental epidemiology with a special focus on exposure assessment; to know specific study designs used in environmental epidemiology; to become familiar with a variety of relevant exposures in international and public health research; to know basic principles of various exposure assessment methods; to be aware of the effects of various types of exposure assessment errors on the results of epidemiological studies.
