53558-01 - Lecture with practical courses: Biotic Indicators and Palaeoecological Reconstruction 2 CP

Semester fall semester 2020
Course frequency Every fall sem.
Lecturers Oliver Heiri (oliver.heiri@unibas.ch, Assessor)
Content Biotic indicators play an important role in modern ecosystem and ecotoxicology assessments, but also in palaeoecological reconstructions of species distributions, of ecosystem changes and of variations in abiotic environmental variables. In this lecture we will discuss the assumptions behind the use of biotic indicators for environmental reconstruction and examine specific examples of proxy applications, such as the use of assemblage data for reconstruction of ecosystem states and past environmental (e.g. climatic, water chemistry) changes. We will also discuss selected examples that show how how index-based and transfer function-based approaches can be used to provide insights into past ecological and environmental change, and that the quantification of past environmental changes based on biotic indicators is a challenging but potentially very powerful approach for understanding past changes in our environment.
Bibliography Selected papers will be provided in the course of the lecture.
