| Content | - In this course the students will be introduced to the European Union (EU) as well as to other currently existing regional international organizations in America, Africa, Asia and the Pacific. The goal of this course is to provide the students with an understanding of different theories explaining regional integration and to enable the students to analyze and understand the existing regional international organizations based on the theories. By comparing the regional organization with the most advanced integration - the EU - with other unions and associations - the NAFTA, MERCOSUR, African Union and ASEAN - the students will learn about the political and economic conditions, type of agreements or institutions and other factors that are necessary for regional integration and that explain the different forms of regional integration we observe today. |

| Assessment details | Attention: All Seminars will be graded in the Department of Political Science with the beginning of the FS20 semester. Grading scale 6.0 to 1.0, whereupon 4.0 is a pass. Continuous assessment Course preparation: All students participating in this course are asked to read the mandatory readings, marked by an asterisk in the course outline before coming to class. The required course readings and all slides of (student) presentation will be available on ADAM. A further requirement is the attendance of all sessions and a presentation in class. You can miss max. one (Tuesday) session (or 3,5 hours) if you have a good reason, explained to the instructor before the session starts. Presentation All participating students are required to present one regional integration theory, a regional international organization or to summarize a discussion on a specific topic. The topics (see the topics below in the course outline) will be assigned in the first meeting. Presentations are held alone or in small groups and answer a number of guiding questions that are provided by the instructor before. The presentation should use some kind of visualization (e.g. ppt-slides) that summarizes and illustrates the presentation. Furthermore, every student prepares a document that provides a short analysis of the presented case (categorization and important factors for IROs or application of theory) and provides a discussion question based on this evaluation (if groups present the same topic, they are asked to submit a common visualization but individual discussion questions and analyses). Each student or group needs to submit the final visualization (e.g. Slides) and the analysis/discussion question (in a pdf file) at least 6 days before the session the presentation takes place in. Grades: Students who meet all course requirements will be awarded 3 ECTS points for a presentation (including slides handed in before and discussion question). The grade considers the participation in class (30 percent), the presentation (50 percent), and the visualization (slides) and discussion question prepared for the presentation (20 percent). Students need at least 50 percent of the possible points to pass. |
