58462-01 - Course: Basic Statistics and Hands-On Analysis with R 1 CP

Content ◾uncertainty and variability (types of data, visualization and summary statistics that depends on types of data)
◾source of variability
◾simple experiment designs (maximizing information and improving reproducibility)
◾sample size calculation follows the experiment design
◾appropriate data analysis follow the experiment design, focus on linear models particularly the ANOVA families
◾presentation/reporting.
Learning objectives This 2-day course is intended for doctorate students and post-doctorates from any discipline who are not expert in statistics but are interested in how to think statistically and how to implement basic and good statistics

Throughout the course we will apply lectures, exercises and interactive group discussions on the topics. Mandatory home assignments is part of the course. Participants will put their hands-on for data description and analysis with the widely used statistics software R.

Participant shall bring their own notebook with an installation of R and R-Studio. First install R from www.r-project.org or https://stat.ethz.ch/CRAN/, then install R-Studio from https://rstudio.com/products/rstudio/download/.
