Content | This seminar explores Southern African landscapes as a subject of historical inquiry. We will focus on southern Namibia and the northern Cape (South Africa) from the 18th century up to the present. We will explore how mercantilism, colonialism and capitalist penetration shaped the physical, social and cultural landscapes south and north of the Orange River, and pay particular attention to how Africans negotiated, shaped and resisted the often-violent disruption of their livelihoods. The seminar will draw on various sources of Southern African history – written archival records, maps, photographs, and oral history – and provide students with opportunities to immerse themselves in innovative historical methodology, theory and interpretation. |
