| Content | In this course we will explore how, why and with what research questions in mind different actors produced historical knowledge about West African History prior to 1900. In doing so, students will be introduced to Africa-centric periodisations in Africa History that terms such as “precolonial” fail to capture: e.g. the rise of African kingdoms, the spread and adoption of religions like Christianity and Islam, State-Building in the 19th Century. Moreover, we will ask how these (now) sources can be used to teach or write a “new” history of Africa pre-1900. In addition to reading an excerpt from the book History of the Gold Coast and Asante (1895), an archival visit to the Basel Mission will help to provide context to the life of its Ghanaian author, the pastor Carl Christian Reindorf. Students are required to participate in a poster presentation, in which they will review recent monographs in the history of Africa pre-1900 in groups. Literatur |
