56878-01 - Lecture: Causality in Finance and Economics 3 CP

Semester fall semester 2020
Course frequency Every fall sem.
Lecturers Ola Mahmoud (ola.mahmoud@unibas.ch, Assessor)
Content Causality is influence by which one event, process or state (a cause) contributes to the production of another event, process or state (the effect) where the cause is partly responsible for the effect, and the effect is partly dependent on the cause. While we are told in economics and finance (the true fact) that "correlation is not causation", this course aims to encourage the empirical researcher to go beyond correlation, to think causally, and to statistically analyze causality in both experimental and observational studies.

The course will broadly cover the following topics:

1. Introduction to principles of causal inference
2. Causal graphs
3. Confounding and interventions
4. Counterfactuals
5. Empirical and statistical methods
6. Applications in finance and economics
Learning objectives The goal of this course is to learn the most important principles of causal reasoning as well as the application of causal inference in empirical analyses in finance and economics.
