58886-01 - Seminar: Discursive identity construction in English 3 CP

Semester fall semester 2020
Course frequency Once only
Lecturers Daria Dayter (daria.dayter@unibas.ch, Assessor)
Content In this class, students will become acquainted with linguistic theories that approach identities as constructed in and through discourse. We will start by describing discursive approaches emerging over the last decades that have contributed to identity studies, including politeness theory and relational work. We will look at linguistic identity construction across both online and offline contexts, with special attention on the recent developments tied to the rise of social media and personal branding. This will be done by addressing the three major strands of human identity: personal identity, group identity and collective identity.
Learning objectives At the end of this course, students should (1) know the main theoretical bases of discursive approach to identity, (2) have an overview of key literature on the topic, and (3) be aware of the methodological concerns involved. They should also acquire practical research skills in designing research projects with a focus on discursive identity construction and gain experience in critically reading and evaluating existing studies.
Bibliography Texts will be made available on ADAM.
Comments The course will take place online, as a combination of asynchronous weekly units with tasks & synchronouns Zoom sessions.
