44979-01 - Lecture: Subcontinental Encounters: South Asian Literatures and Cultures 2 CP

Semester fall semester 2020
Course frequency Irregular
Lecturers Christiane Schlote (christiane.schlote@unibas.ch, Assessor)
Content The Indian writer Anita Desai once told an interviewer: "I grew up in old Delhi and when I was a small child it was still a capital of the British Empire. It was a curious world. There was the British element, there was the Islamic element in Delhi, and there was the ordinary basic and enduring Indian element." This lecture will provide a critical overview of these elements and a variety of themes and discourses which make up the literatures and cultures of a region as diverse as the countries designated as 'South Asia' and including India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal and Sri Lanka, among others. We will situate our discussions of South Asian constructions of ethnicity, gender, nation and religion and cultural representations of major historical events such as India's Partition and the creation of Pakistan within the broader conceptual frameworks of transnationalism, global capitalism and mobility. Texts will include works by Mulk Raj Anand, Anita Desai, G. V. Desani, Shashi Deshpande, Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni, Amitav Ghosh, Jhumpa Lahiri, Saadat Hasan Manto, R. K. Narayan, Satyajit Ray, Arundhati Roy, Salman Rushdie and Rabindranath Tagore among others.
Learning objectives Students will be introduced to the multifaceted nature of South Asian literary and cultural texts and their contexts on the subcontinent and in the diaspora.
