Content The Research Design Workshop is a block course and takes place in the second half of the Spring semester (8th-10th May 2020). It brings together core faculty from Basel and Cape Town over an intensive 2,5 days at an off-campus retreat approx. 1 hour outside of Cape Town (This course takes place in Furtwangen in September 2020) . The workshop is geared towards kick-starting the students’ individual thesis journey and guides them in shaping their budding research interests into a workable thesis topic.
Learning objectives In a collegial yet concentrated atmosphere, the students engage in a variety of individual and collective mapping, planning and writing exercises, all the while exchanging ideas amongst one another and with the core teaching staff from Cape Town (will be provided online) and Basel. Ultimately, students will leave the workshop with: a team of two supervisors, a workable thesis topic and working title, a draft research plan, and a personal timeline that outlines their intended study trajectory until graduation.

Admission requirements This course is only open to students of the Critical Urbanisms MA program. Due to the corona epidemic this course was moved from the spring to the fall semester. It will take place in Furtwangen from 11.-13 September 2020.
