59840-01 - Lecture: Introduction to Economic History 3 CP

Content The lecture series studies human’s history through the eyes of an economist. To understand the dynamics and differences in the standard of living across economies we proceed in three steps. After a brief introduction to data sources and we discuss how to measure the standard of living. Finally, we make a journey through the topics of economic history to discuss the potential determinants of the living standard.
Learning objectives An overview on:
• topics in economic history and the determinants of economic welfare
• important data sources and challenges in using historical data
Comments Teacher is Prof. Dr. Robert Stelter, new assistent professor for Quantitative Economic History (Cliometrics) at our faculty.

Admission requirements Fundamentals in statistics, micro- and macroeconomic are useful but not a hard condition. Good command English.
Course application Registration: Please enrol in MOnA. EUCOR-Students and students of other Swiss Universities have to enrol at the students administration office (studseksupport1@unibas.ch) within the official enrolment period. Enrolment = Registration for the exam!
