59979-01 - Doctoral course: Matters of the Urban 3 CP

Semester fall semester 2020
Course frequency Once only
Lecturers Julia Büchele (j.buechele@unibas.ch)
Aylin Brigitte Yildirim Tschoepe (aylin.tschoepe@unibas.ch, Assessor)
Content The concepts, issues, focus areas many of us work on intersect with urban matters in various ways:
societal changes, cultural constructs, everyday rhythms and rituals, mobility and migration, questions of power and intersectional discrimination, contagion and disease, as well as the political, the performative, and the poetic are among some of research subjects we deal with.
Exchanges of work in progress, peer feedback, and advice on how to move from PhD to job in a welcoming space of mutual support (not toxic competition) among peers are intended to build a stronger network across individual institutes, support young scholars, and, in the long run, foster a growing community in the form of a peer network.

This Doktoratsveranstaltung is intended for doctoral students (and early PostDocs in the process of) preparing for the step from PhD to job. The course is open to PhDs from different seminars, programs, institutes and centers at the University of Basel.
Participants share a common theoretical or methodological research interest in matters of the urban - or spatial questions more broadly - as they intersect with their individual fields (Anthropology, Gender Studies, various Area Studies, Human Geography, Urban Studies, History, Political Science, Sociology, Psychology , Linguistics, etc).

This doctoral event will take place in the format of a workshop group with the goal of fostering a peer network. The group will gather in bi-weekly meetings. During a regular meeting, one or more participants share and discuss their work in progress at different stages and in various formats and media (text, sound, visuals, etc). The work needs to be circulated two weeks before the respective meeting. together with questions the respective presenter wants to discuss with the group. One to two respondents will prepare comments in response to the presenter’s questions, while the rest of the group joins the discussion and helps the presenter take their work further. This kind of peer support is useful in preparation for a conference presentation, before submitting an article or a seminar paper.
One meeting per semester will be used to invite senior scholars or experts of the everyday who share their experience on a matter of common interest to the group (among the invitees will be an urban activist, an actor-network-theorist, a sensory ethnographer, a community organizer, etc). Another meeting per semester will be used to attend an exhibition, event, or a tour around a subject of interest to the group.
Meetings will take place in a seminar room on campus, unless otherwise specified.
