Content | This online-seminar addresses Black Colombia in past, present and future. Since 1991, Colombia has been established as “pluricultural and multi-ethnic” in its Constitution. What does this mean for Afrocolombian communities today? In our course program, we will trace how hairstyles relate to ancient slaves’ escape routes and explore to what extent #Blacklivesmatter in today’s Colombia. We critically challenge racist representations of blackfacing and zoom into the rich cultural practices of Afrocolombian lifeworlds. By combining prose and poetry, films and social media with academic literature, we will approach the key issues and debates around memory, politics and identity from an anthropological but also an artistic point of view. Finally, we aim to understand the legacies of racism, social inequality as well as cultural politics in a Colombia which looks back on centuries of blood and violence but also on a history of resistance, diversity and hope. |
Learning objectives | • Students acquire a historical, legal, political and sociocultural overview of Afrocolombian communities. •Students examine and know the relevant literature regarding «lo afro» in Colombia and are able to analyse connections and repercussion between Africa and Latin America. • Students deepen their critical reading competences and acquire skills in analysing literature but also different media such as films. • Students acquire skills in the anthropological analysis of memory, politics and identity debates. |
