28878-01 - Lecture with practical courses: Data analysis in Epidemiology 3 CP

Semester spring semester 2021
Course frequency Every spring sem.
Lecturers Tracy Glass (tracy.glass@unibas.ch)
Marek Kwiatkowski (marek.kwiatkowski@unibas.ch)
Giusi Moffa (giusi.moffa@unibas.ch)
Amanda Ross (amanda.ross@unibas.ch, Assessor)
Content Description: This course builds on the basic statistics courses of the MSc in Epidemiology. The lectures focus on practical examples, based on datasets from epidemiological studies. Exercises are designed to teach students how to carry out the major steps of an epidemiological analysis project. Regression analyses, including classical, logistic and survival models, will constitute the core of the lectures. Additional topics such as random effects, repeated measures and other topics will also be included. All exercises will be solved using STATA, but students may use other software if they are familiar with it.
Content:
General modelling issues
Linear regression
Random effects
Logistic regression
Repeated measures
Survival analysis
Introduction to causal inference
Learning objectives Students develop practical skills in conducting regression analyses and in describing and presenting their results. Based on concrete scientific questions, they can devise analysis plans and carry out the respective analyses correctly. They know strategies for model development, are familiar with methods of confounder control and know how to model and interpret effect modification.
Comments Weeks 7-14
Methods: Lectures and practicals
20 April 2021: 11:15 - 13:00: Swiss TPH Room Matterhorn
1 June 2021: Swiss TPH Room Lhotse

Admission requirements This course follows on from the courses Biostatistics and Statistical Modelling, which are part of the MSc in Epidemiology and are taught in the Autumn semester. Students need to have a basic level of biostatistics, and have an idea of hypothesis testing, estimation, regression models and confounding.
