28874-01 - Lecture with practical courses: Malaria epidemiology and control 2 CP

Semester spring semester 2021
Course frequency Every spring sem.
Lecturers Nakul Chitnis (nakul.chitnis@unibas.ch, Assessor)
Melissa Penny (melissa.penny@unibas.ch)
Content Weekly sessions will be taught by different Swiss TPH specialists with experience in relevant areas of malaria science. Practical sessions will provide a chance to see parasites under the microscope and introduce students to malaria simulation software developed at Swiss TPH.
Learning objectives The lecture will give students an understanding of the dynamics of malaria in both human and mosquito populations, and of how malaria can be controlled.
The lectures will include a brief history of malaria interventions, the biology of parasite and mosquito populations and the human immune response. Students will learn about current malaria control practice and the state-of-the-art in development of novel interventions such as vaccines, chemotherapy and vector control. They will consider the organisation and funding of malaria control, including integrated control, and the need to consider the overall health system context.
The course will also address current issues surrounding elimination and eradication.
Comments Methods: Lectures demonstrations, computer-based practical exercises and an essay
