Content Description: Demography is the study of the size, structure and distribution of populations, and how these changes as a result of rates of birth, death, and migration. In this course, which comprises of various interactive lectures, demonstrations, hands-on exercises, group work, and discussions in class, we develop the basic demographic concepts and measures. We explore how these key concepts and measures relate to each other and their linkages with epidemiologic key concepts and measures (and beyond). The theoretical concepts are illustrated and tested by referring to actual data and research projects. The course is introductory in nature does, not require advanced quantitative or IT/software knowledge, but spans the bridge from basic demographic and epidemiologic key concepts and measures to some of the highly topical research work in the field.

Content:
Basic demographic concepts and measures (birth, death, migration, age and sex structures, population pyramids, demographic and epidemiologic transitions)
Demographic data sources, data completeness and data quality
Standardization of rates
Life tables, life expectancy, and health expectancy
Summary measures of population health
Global Burden of Disease study and collaboration
Learning objectives To understand key concepts of demography and demographic measures, why they are important, and how they relate to public health; to know and understand important data collection methods and data sources in demography; to know and understand the most important summary measures of population health.
