60422-01 - Practical course: Main Trends in the Historiography of Turkey: Reading and Interpreting Turkish Sources 2 CP

Semester spring semester 2021
Course frequency Once only
Lecturers Özhan Kapici (oezhan.kapici@unibas.ch, Assessor)
Content In contemporary Turkey, there are a few scholarly texts which are widely taken to constitute a comprehensive paradigm influencing all of Turkish studies. Certain axioms of modern Turkish studies in Turkey were elaborated by Mehmed Fuad Köprülü (1890-1966) during the Republican period. Köprülü is considered not only the founder of modern Turkish historiography but also the pioneer of the Turcology in Turkey. The large themes in Köprülü’s normative works constituted the contemporary Turkish historical outlook. The life and works of Köprülü have been discussed in several monographs and translated into foreign languages such as French, English, Russian, Serbian, and Italian by Turcologists. This practical course (Übung) aims to focus on a critical reading of Köprülü’s magnum opus, Osmanlı Devleti’nin Kuruluşu (The Foundation of the Ottoman State). This modest work remains one of the most comprehensive texts on the Turkish nation-building process from a historical perspective. The readings in this course will be supported by the other works by Köprülü to interpret his paradigm and discussions. These include Türk Edebiyatında İlk Mutasavvıflar (Early Mystics in Turkish Literature) and Bizans Müesseselerinin Osmanlı Müesseselerine Tesiri Hakkında Bazı Mülahazalar (Some Observations on the Influence of Byzantine Institutions on Ottoman Institutions).
Learning objectives By the end of the course students are expected to be able to:
- gain skills in reading and evaluating Turkish sources
- explain and interpret the basic terminology used in Turkish historical sources
- improve their critical thinking skills in the Turkish sources
