Content Feminist ethnography is an important methodology utilized across disciplines within social sciences and cultural studies. Originating in anthropology and evolving in conversation with decolonial and women of color feminism and queer theory, feminist ethnography is a crucial method for disrupting the presumably universal — yet racialized and essentialized — construct of ‘womanhood.’ Insisting on historical, cultural, and material specificity and recognizing that all research is shaped by power dynamics which are impacted by the presence of the researcher, feminist ethnography is a crucial method for any researcher invested in socially just and politically transformative field research. Potential topics covered might include: tensions in positionality and identities in the field; the legacies of women of color feminism in shaping feminist ethnography; and the importance of feminist ethnography for the study of militarism and violent conflict. This reading group targets PhD students who will use or have used feminist ethnography in their field research and who seek to further develop their theoretical and methodological skills.
Bibliography To be announced in February
