Content | The main goal of the course is to enable students to apply general theories of political decision-making to analyse how the EU works. The first part of the course will introduce the governing structure of the European Union. We start by investigating the central EU institutions: European Commission, EU Council of Ministers and European Parliament. After an individual introduction of these institutions, we will investigate how we can understand and analyse their decision-making procedures in detail. In a second part, we study additional influencing factors on EU politics such as public opinion, interest groups, and parties. In the last part of the course, we will look apply our knowledge to other International Organisations. |
Learning objectives | The students will increase their understanding about the functioning of the EU institutions. By studying the actors and the decision-making processes in the EU they will get a solid understanding of decision-making, negotiations and the central theoretical approaches to understand the EU and political decisions at the EU level. |
