60409-01 - Seminar: The Politics of Researching the !Garip: From Missionary Travelogues to Satellite Imagery (3 CP)

Semester spring semester 2021
Course frequency Once only
Lecturers Luregn Lenggenhager (luregn.lenggenhager@unibas.ch)
James Lawrence Zimmermann Merron (james.merron@unibas.ch, Assessor)
Content In this seminar we explore the !Garip (also known as the Orange River) which forms a natural and political border between Namibia and South Africa. Not only has the river been in the focus of geographical research since at least the 19th century but, more recently, it has become the subject of diplomatic, political and economic interest. This is because over time the river has changed its shape and course making the exact border between Namibia and South Africa fluid and ambiguous. The center of our attention will be the ways in which the !Garip’s geography has been researched and spatially represented through maps from early missionaries, the geographical narratives of people living in the area, aerial photography and – more recently - satellite imaginary. The aim of the seminar is to familiarize participants with theories and concepts of critical cartography, landscape studies, and technoscience in order to build-up a competence for dealing an array of historical sources and technologies of cartographic research in a particular regional context.
