Semester spring semester 2021
Course frequency Irregular
Lecturers Murielle Delley (murielle.delley@unibas.ch, Assessor)
Content Concept of heterogeneous catalysis - Material classes, their properties and catalytic applications in industry and research - Components of catalytic systems: catalyst surface, bulk, active site, support, promoter - Surface chemistry on a molecular-level: type of site, chemical environment, site distribution, strain, and stability, surface bond strengths, defects - Catalyst preparation: traditional vs single-site and surface organometallic strategies - Spectroscopic strategies for surface characterization: o Surface area and morphology: adsorption isotherms + chemisorption, physisorption, TPD, electron microscopy, .. o X-ray techniques: XPS, XAS, .. o Optical spectroscopy o Particular focus. Basic and advanced vibrational spectroscopy: IR, Raman, probe molecules, surface-enhanced methods, SEIRAS, SERS, SFG o Nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy: SS-NMR, DNP-SENS o Electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy, EPR o Magnetism o Operando, in situ, and time-resolved studies - Thermodynamics and kinetics of heterogeneous catalysis, Sabatier principle, elementary catalytic steps on a surface - Side reactions, poisoning, catalyst restructuring and deactivation - Chemical and physical principles of catalyst design and surface manipulation - Selected examples from classic and current literature
