60725-01 - Lecture: Persuasion in English 2 CP

Semester spring semester 2021
Course frequency Once only
Lecturers Daria Dayter (daria.dayter@unibas.ch, Assessor)
Content How can we get someone to behave in a way that they initially did not intend? And how can we change what our interlocutor is thinking about a certain issue? We can use language to 'convince', 'persuade', 'cajole', or 'coax' our counterpart into a certain behaviour or way of mind. These are activities we engage in constantly, usually without even consciously thinking about them. It is words which have the power to mould and influence opinions, attitudes, and thus, in the end behaviour. This persuasive power of language is at the centre of this lecture, and we will approach it primarily from the point of view of interpersonal pragmatics.
Learning objectives At the end of this course students should
- have gained a thorough knowledge of key concepts in linguistic approaches to persuasion
- be able to use linguistic terminology to describe components of persuasive message
- have sharpened their understanding of research challenges when it comes to persuasive language
- be confident in formulating new research questions
