60731-01 - Seminar: Problematizing the Happy Ending: 100 Years of Romantic Conclusions in Anglophone Literary Novels and their Filmic Adaptations 3 CP

Semester spring semester 2021
Course frequency Once only
Lecturers Francesca Pierini (francesca.pierini@unibas.ch, Assessor)
Content This seminar looks at how narratives, in literary texts and their filmic adaptations, resolve textual and ideological conflicts in the formulation of their endings.
Learning objectives The seminar will focus on (1) building an understanding and knowledge on how narratives work, at the level of genre, story and ending. In the process, students are invited to (2) explore their personal vulnerability or resistance to certain master plots, to (3) challenge familiar and often unchallenged biases, and (4) to become more critical consumers and readers of narrative.
Bibliography 1. E.M. Forster's "A Room with a View", 1908
2. Daphne du Maurier's "Rebecca", 1938
3. John Fowles' "The French Lieutenant's Woman", 1969 or A.S. Byatt's "Possession", 1990.
4. Colm Tóibín's "Brooklyn", 2009.
5. Sally Rooney's "Normal People", 2018.
