60849-01 - Seminar: Introduction to Statistics for Language Sciences using R 3 CP

Semester spring semester 2021
Course frequency Once only
Lecturers Moniek Kuijpers (moniek.kuijpers@unibas.ch, Assessor)
Content There will be five online modules consisting of powerpoint presentations with voice overs that will guide you through the basic principles of statistics in the domain of literature reception. There will be a module introducing you to R; a module on data preparation in R; one on fundamentals of frequentist statistics; one on descriptive statistics; and one on basic inferential statistics.

The course will take place over 6 weeks: week 16 (19.04 – 23.04) to week 21 (24.05 – 28.05). We will meet every Friday of these six weeks from 14:00 till 16:00 to go over the online modules (we will do one module per week, except for the fifth module which we will split up in 2 sessions), your assignments and to go through some exercises together. I will give you your next assignment at the end of each Friday's meeting, so you have a week to prepare for the next meeting (i.e., go through the online module for that week and do the assignment).
Learning objectives - Get acquainted with the programming language R and its uses for the purposes of statistical testing
- Understanding how to write a script in R to test an empirical question statistically
- Obtain a basic understanding of descriptive and inferential statistics and how they can be applied to answer empirical questions about literature reception.
