49880-01 - Course: English Linguistics II: Sentence to discourse 2 CP

Semester spring semester 2021
Course frequency Every spring sem.
Lecturers Danièle Klapproth Muazzin (daniele.klapproth@unibas.ch, Assessor)
Content Continuing on from the first part of the introduction to the linguistics of English, this course will start off with an exploration of the construction and interpretation of meaning, including both semantic and pragmatic perspectives. Further concepts and issues in pragmatics (such as speech act theory, indirectness, cooperativeness, face work and cross-cultural communication) will then be introduced to explore the dynamic aspects of communicative interaction. In the third part of the semester, students will be introduced to some of the key concepts used in sociolinguistics with its major focus on linguistic variation and the use of language in its social context. Issues of interest here will include the relationship between language and social identity and the linguistic encoding of power relations.
Learning objectives Students will familiarise themselves with key concepts in semantics, pragmatics and sociolinguistics, and will gain experience in applying this knowledge to real-life examples and language samples.
