60862-01 - Doctoral course: Urban Matters 3 CP

Semester spring semester 2021
Course frequency Once only
Lecturers Julia Büchele (j.buechele@unibas.ch)
Aylin Yildirim Tschoepe (aylin.tschoepe@unibas.ch, Assessor)
Content The study of the urban and space more generally is what brings us together in a peer exchange across fields and stages of our degrees. This doctoral event will take place in the format of a workshop group with the goal of fostering a peer community.

Participants share a common theoretical or methodological research interest in matters of the urban - as well as space and spatial issues more broadly - as they intersect with their individual fields (Anthropology, Gender Studies, various Area Studies, Media Studies, Human Geography, Urban Studies, Architecture, History, Political Science, Sociology, Psychology, Linguistics, Biology, etc).

The concepts, issues, focus areas many of us work on intersect with matters of the urban in various ways: societal changes, cultural constructs, everyday rhythms and rituals, mobility and migration, questions of power and intersectional discrimination, contagion and disease, as well as the political, the performative, and the poetic are among some of research subjects we deal with.
Exchanges of work in progress, feedback, and advice take place in a welcoming space of mutual support (not toxic competition) among peers. This kind of peer support is useful in preparation for a conference presentation, before submitting an article or a seminar paper. Furthermore, our aim is to create networks across individual institutes, support young scholars, and foster a growing peer community.

The group will gather in bi-weekly meetings. During a regular meeting, one or more participants share and discuss their work in progress at different stages and in various formats and media (text, sound, visuals, etc). The work needs to be circulated one week before the respective meeting (Wednesday before the meeting). One to two respondents will prepare comments in response to the presenter’s questions, while the rest of the group joins the discussion and helps the presenter take their work further.

One meeting per semester will be used to invite senior scholars or experts of the everyday who share their experience on a matter of common interest to the group (possible invitees: urban activists, actor-network-theorists, sensory urban ethnographers, community organizers, etc). Another meeting per semester could be used to attend an exhibition, event, or a tour around a subject of interest to the group (pandemic situation allowing).

Regular meetings will take place online, unless otherwise specified (when in-presence meetings are safe and upon agreement of the group)
