60920-01 - Seminar: Registered Reports 1 CP

Semester spring semester 2021
Course frequency Irregular
Lecturers Mariela Elena Jaffé (mariela.jaffe@unibas.ch, Assessor)
Content Organizers: Dr. Hans Rocha Ijzerman (https://corelab.io/), Adeyemi Adetula, Patrick Forscher, and Mariela Jaffé
Dates: May 6 and 7, 2021 (online, if situation does not improve)

Goal of the workshop:
To develop a fully prepared Confirmatory Report by the end of the workshop. The Registered Report will be developed entirely on the OSF, using the CO-RE Lab’s Confirmatory Report Template (https://osf.io/qpdth/). The goal will be to submit this confirmatory report to IRSP (https://www.rips-irsp.com/about/confirmatory-reports/). Alternatively, if participants do not feel they can sufficiently accurately predict, they can choose to submit an Exploratory Report (https://www.rips-irsp.com/about/exploratory-reports/); for examples, see Sarda et al (https://psyarxiv.com/ewcpt/) or Wittmann et al https://psyarxiv.com/35jtx/).

During the workshop:
During the workshop, besides preparing our OSF Confirmatory Report, we will engage in a number of exercises:
- We will have a first discussion about the need for open science via a ~1 hour presentation.
- We will learn how easy it is to p-hack your way to success. We will first use the 538 app (https://slate.com/health-and-science/2017/06/daryl-bem-proved-esp-is-real-showed-science-is-broken.html) to prove that Democrats or Republicans have better economic theories. We will then simulate some data (http://www.lornecampbell.org/?p=185) and try to see who can get a significant effect out of their data first.
- After this, we will do an exercise to replicate each other’s work. For this to work, please bring a previous research project to the workshop (published or not). I will assign you to a partner who will have to fill in a replication recipe (https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0022103113001819) ONLY on the basis of your written research project (you are NOT allowed to talk to each other).
- We will show you how to set up a project (including how to set up the right storage location), and how to fork a project. We will also show you how to install add-ons.

Modalities: Participants can choose to complete one of the following options:
1. A replication project in a group.
2. A novel project in a group.
3. A replication project by oneself.
4. A novel project by oneself.
To coordinate group work, please contact Mariela Jaffé for the participant list.

Before the workshop: For this project to be achievable, some work is required before the workshop. In general, there are two tracks in this workshop:

• Track 1: Ideally, you submit a stage-one proposal to IRSP by March 10. If you submit by March 10, you will receive feedback from IRSP whether the project proposal is of interest to the journal. This is highly recommended, but limited to the first 5 submitters. (-->Update: This track is now closed).
- For information on what the proposal should contain, please see IRSP’s submission guidelines (https://www.rips-irsp.com/about/confirmatory-reports/). Because of a clear Conflict of Interest, Hans IJzerman will not judge your proposals. If the Stage 1 proposal is accepted, we will further develop your project for IRSP (if not accepted, you can either try another project, or we develop a project as a pre-registration).

• Track 2: In the event that you cannot submit a stage-one proposal (for whatever reason) before March 10, you may still participate but you would need to write your theoretical introduction before the workshop and send it to the workshop organizer (Hans IJzerman).
