62054-01 - Seminar: Solidarity: Conditions and Practices 3 CP

Semester fall semester 2021
Course frequency Once only
Lecturers Rita Kesselring (rita.kesselring@unibas.ch, Assessor)
Content Solidarity is key to social anthropology and the social sciences more generally because it raises the question of what holds society together. The seminar looks at solidarity as a practice. It requires recognition (of the other) and organizing in order to emerge. After studying the history of the term and discussing some conceptual philosophical and anthropological scholarship on the topic, we will read about contemporary practices of solidarity (Germany’s “welcome culture” of summer 2015, Greece’ austerity crisis, labor struggles, social movements, practices across the North-South divide, among others). Key question will be whether solidarity across societal boundaries is possible, and under what conditions.
