44703-01 - Lecture: Discovery and Optimization of Bioactive Compounds 3 CP

Semester fall semester 2021
Course frequency Irregular
Lecturers Peter Maienfisch (peter.maienfisch@unibas.ch, Assessor)
Content An introduction to modern life science research and development is provided, with emphasis on the discovery and optimization of bioactive compounds. The field of crop protection is discussed in detail and cross-references are made to the pharmaceutical industry and drug discovery
The following topics will be covered:
The life science markets with a focus on modern agribusiness - markets, benefits and challenges
Current trends in life science research
Case studies on the discovery and optimization of bioactive compounds
Design of bioactive compounds – bioisosterism, scaffold hopping, privileged structures
Product safety assessment and registration with examples from agrochemicals
Modern formulation technology
Patent protection
This course includes a half day visit of the Syngenta Research Campus in Stein including a tour through the biological testing and chemistry facilities followed by a round table discussion with leading scientists (depend on the Covid-19 situation).
Learning objectives Basic knowledge of life science R&D and of the fundamental design principles in crop protection research and medicinal chemistry. Awareness of current research approaches, trends, and highlights.
