62169-01 - Proseminar: Roman Socio-Cultural Life: Voices from the Margins 3 CP

Semester fall semester 2021
Course frequency Once only
Lecturers Lisa Brunet (lisa.brunet@unibas.ch, Assessor)
Content Throughout the past twenty years, social media have evolved from mere entertainment to fully integrated aspects of our lives. People who lacked public platforms ten years ago are speaking up. In 2020, #blacklivesmatter was the second most used hashtag trending on Twitter. Certainly, the elevation of marginal voices has raised awareness on the discrimination of minority groups. As a result, the study of classics and the ancient world has come under scrutiny. After all, do Ovid’s misogynistic poems still have a place in the #metoo era? How dangerous is Tacitus, who helped fuel Nazi propaganda with his Germania? Together, we will examine classical sources whilst focusing on the ancient attitude towards minority groups (women, children, disabled people, LGBTQIA+ etc.). As platforms such as Twitter were not available, these Roman “outsiders” thus do not speak to us directly. Therefore, our sources range from implicit statements in literary texts and legal documents to graffiti, toys and more.
Learning objectives In this course, students are encouraged to discuss a variety of sources not only to reconstruct the daily lives of the Roman people (a population that extended far beyond the handful of elite Latin-speaking men), but also to establish the importance of classics in present-day debates concerning diversity and inclusion.
