| Content | The seminar focus on the transformations of ideological conceptions and political discourses in Turkey from the Empire to the Republic. The attendees will discuss the discourse of the Ottoman imperial ideology around the key concepts with its Islamic and non-Islamic origins during the formative age in the first sessions. The participants will also attempt to evaluate the introduction of modern political ideologies into the empire and map the discourses of ideologies in the late imperial period. The studies in the seminar will include the fundamental concepts of the political ideologies in Turkey with their transformation in the age of reformation and revolution. Topics will concentrate on the principles of the political thought and manner of discourses that constituted Turkey's contemporary ideologies, including Kemalism, Nationalism, Islamism, Liberalism, and Socialism with their representatives. |
| Learning objectives | By the end of the seminar, students will - explain the origins of political ideologies in Turkey - specify the main concepts of ideological discourses in the Ottoman Empire and Modern Turkey - maps the ideological movements in Turkey from a historical perspective - compare and contrast different ideological traditions in Turkey |
