62412-01 - Lecture: Third Party Mediation in Social Interaction: Views From Conflict Resolution and Interpreting 2 CP

Content In this course, we explore interactions in which one party acts as an intermediary between other participants. We focus on two types of settings that involve mediation by third parties: conflict resolution (for example, mediation in criminal and civil cases), and interpreting in multilingual interactions (with a focus on non-professional interpreting) The objective is to examine critically the role of mediators and interpreters as “neutral intermediaries”, and to explore the ways in which the third parties actively contribute to resolving conflicts and to creating meaningful action between co-participants. In addition to following lectures, students will engage with these topics through reading and discussing research literature and observing authentic data examples. After completing the course, the students will be able to use relevant analytic tools and concepts to identify and analyze key issues in third-party mediation as social action. The course is based on the methods of multimodal conversation analysis and interactional linguistics. It is beneficial but not mandatory for students to have some previous knowledge of these approaches.
