53604-01 - Course: South African Contemporary Debates 2 CP

Semester fall semester 2021
Course frequency Irregular
Lecturers Laura Nkula Wenz (laura.nkula@unibas.ch, Assessor)
Content The course takes place over the first two weeks at the University of Cape Town. The first week coincides with the university’s official orientation, while the second week is built around field trips. Between fieldtrips, the syllabus builds on five discussion sessions. Each discussion has a set of short assigned readings in a reader, which will be provided to the students in December. The readings are a selection of popular contemporary non-fiction and fiction that engage in varied ways with the complexity and contradictions of South African cities and society.
Learning objectives Contemporary South African Debates orients students to issues that shape South African cities and the nation itself. It explores debates that shape our understanding of apartheid, democracy, and the possibilities and limits of transformation and decolonization. The block course is built on a mix of fieldtrips, discussion sessions, and readings. Each field trip includes a task, which directs students to these varied methods and forms of engagement. The course provides students with a space to start to experiment with methods for observing and engaging the city through writing, mapping, and audio and visual techniques.
Comments This is a catch-up spring semester course and depending on the devleopment of the pandemic is planned to be taking place at the Centre for African Cities in Cape Town.
