62337-01 - Seminar: English and the American Empire 3 CP

Semester fall semester 2021
Course frequency Once only
Lecturers Beatriz Lorente (beatriz.lorente@unibas.ch, Assessor)
Content "Language has always been the perfect instrument of empire."
--Antonio de Nebrija, Granidtica Castellana

The United States is supposedly exceptional for being a world power without having been an empire. And yet, between 1898 to 1900, as part of its territorial expansion, the United States absorbed the bulk of Spain's remaining overseas empire (the Philippines, Puerto Rico and Guam) and annexed the non-Spanish lands of Hawai'i, Wake Island and American Samoa. This course examines how English was a "perfect instrument" in this period of expansion of the American colonial empire, especially through the systems of education and schooling that the United States established in these lands. The launching point of the course will be the westward expansion of the country which led to the displacement of Native Americans. There will be a focus on three cases: Hawai'i, which became an American state, Puerto Rico, which continues to be an unincorporated American territory, and the Philippines, which was 'granted' independence in 1946.
Learning objectives Students will be introduced to:
1. The role of English language education in the expansion of the American colonial empire
2. A history of English in Hawai'i, Puerto Rico and the Philippines
Bibliography Materials will be made available on ADAM.
