62338-01 - Seminar: Virginia Woolf and Vita Sackville-West 3 CP

Semester fall semester 2021
Course frequency Once only
Lecturers Ina Habermann (ina.habermann@unibas.ch, Assessor)
Content "I want to see you in the lamplight, in your emeralds." (Virginia to Vita, Oct 1927) The story of the relationship between Virginia Woolf, the experimental modernist writer and Vita Sackville-West, the aristocratic middlebrow author, is one of the best-known and 'romantic' in English literature. The experience touched both women very deeply and had a crucial impact on their writing throughout the 1920s. We will trace this relationship and study the work it inspired, touching on issues such as class, gender and sexuality, art, literary modernism and the multiple connections between biography and fiction. Our reading of key novels will be supplemented by letters, diary entries, poetry and essays as well as relevant secondary literature.
Learning objectives Students will become acquainted with a key chapter in English literary history and reflect on the complex relationship between life and writing. They will also improve their knowledge about genre and their close-reading skills.
