56564-01 - Seminar: Writing Research in Psychology 1 CP

This workshop series gives researchers who are in the process of writing up research a framework in which to develop their writing practice and competence, and to give and receive feedback on written output.

In a launching input session at the start of each module, you are familiarised with the linguistic features of a specific section of articles.
During the weeks thereafter, you work on your own texts, ideally with a writing partner.
At the end of the writing phase, you receive written and oral feedback from the lecturer on an excerpt of your text.

The workshop consists of three modules spread over two semesters.

Module 1: Introductions (HS21)
*Writing processes and productive feedback
*Structure and language of introductions (hooks, gaps and questions)
*Scholarly style: lexis and syntax

Module 2: Methods and results (HS21)
*Structure and language of methods and results sections (narrative and descriptive discourse, relating the verbal and the visual)
*Scholarly style: paragraphs

Module 3: Discussions, abstracts, and titles (FS22)
*Structure and language of discussions, abstracts, and titles
*Scholarly style: argumentative discourse
*Reflection on the overall process and output
Learning objectives To use writing processes that enhance the quality and volume of written research, thereby developing writing competence.
Comments Maximum number of participants: 12.

Selection criteria:
1. Currently a PhD candidate in psychology
2. After that, by lottery.

 

Admission requirements Doctoral candidates in the Faculty of Psychology of the University of Basel who use English as a lingua franca on level C1 or higher, as well as those who are first language users of English.
