Semester fall semester 2022

Content The "big four" principles of beneficence, non-maleficence, autonomy and justice have become foundational values for biomedical ethics. Since their introduction by Beauchamp and Childress in 1979, it has become common for ethicists and doctors to use the ‘big four’ as the basis of ethical discussions. While their deployment may be diverse, their status as guiding principles has often gone unchallenged. For a discipline to remain relevant, it is imperative that it periodically evaluates, critiques, and reforms its foundations. With this in mind, this course will critically reflect on the big four and principlism in general for biomedical ethics. Students will hear diverse views and be given the chance to present their own views to a critical audience.
