10645-01 - Lecture: Monetary Theory 3 CP

Content In this lecture, we will study the roles of money and alternative means of payment in modern economies. We will be looking at the kind of frictions that make money essential and beneficial. On this basis, we will discuss various micro- and macroeconomic aspects of monetary theory and policy.
Learning objectives Study the microfoundations of monetary theory.
Bibliography The lecture is based on the book "Money, Payments, and Liquidity" (MIT Press, 2nd edition) by Guillaume Rocheteau (University of California, Irvine) and Ed Nosal (Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta). Next to the book, we will discuss research papers at the frontier of monetary economics. Students are expected to acquire the book. Relevant papers will be uploaded to the website.

Admission requirements Prerequisites:
Completed BA in Business und Economics.
Course application Registration: Please enrol in the Online Services before the course starts. EUCOR-Students and students of other Swiss Universities have to enrol at the students administration office (studseksupport1@unibas.ch) within the official enrolment period. In order to get access to ADAM in time, it is best to enrol before the course starts though.

Assessment format main lecture exam
Assessment details Written exam and seminar presentations. In the seminar, students will present a paper at the research frontier of monetary theory. The final grade is a weighted average of the exam and the presentation. Participation in the seminar is mandatory.
written exam: 16.01.2023; 14:15-15:45. WWZ S15: A-Z.


The repeat exam will be held on 02.02.23; 12:30-14:00. You will receive the rooms for the repeat exam by mail.
