66062-01 - Research seminar: Cognitive Linguistics 4 CP

Semester fall semester 2022
Course frequency Irregular
Lecturers Heike Behrens (heike.behrens@unibas.ch, Assessor)
Content Cognitive Linguistics addresses the structure and emergence of meaning and grammar from a functionalist, usage-based perspective. In this seminar, we will go into more depth regarding issues of Cognitive Grammar and Construction Grammar to see how syntax encodes certain perspectives on an event, and how the speakers of a language conventionalize ways of expression, leading to low-level generalizations rather than “rules”. Regarding semantics, we will look at processes of meaning extension (metaphor, metonymy, polysemy).
Learning objectives The seminar will deepen insights from the PS “Language and the mind”, and the lecture “Usage-based models of language” by focusing on some of the key concepts and seminal articles or books. Students will learn on what evidence grammatical theories are developed, and how they help to unravel the processes that underly human cognition.
