48667-01 - Course: English Linguistics I: Sound to sentence 2 CP

Semester fall semester 2022
Course frequency Every fall sem.
Lecturers Danièle Klapproth Muazzin (daniele.klapproth@unibas.ch, Assessor)
Content In this course, students will acquire a basic understanding of the nature of the English language as a linguistic system. We will first explore the nature and structure of English words (morphology) and how words combine to form longer units such as clauses, phrases and sentences (syntax). We will then go on to study the English sound system (phonetics and phonology), and will in that context study the origin and use of vowels, diphthongs and consonants and learn to use the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA). We will also look at such issues as word and sentence stress and intonation. All in all, this course will thus provide an introduction to the basic components that make up a language user’s linguistic competence.
Learning objectives To gain a basic understanding of English phonetics and phonology, morphology and syntax.
Bibliography Bieswanger, Markus; Becker, Annette (2021): "Introduction to English Linguistics". 5th Edition. Tübingen: Narr. (Please note, the 4th Edition, 2017, is equally acceptable.)
