67055-01 - Seminar: Open-label Placebo – Really? From Deception to Appreciation 1 CP

Semester fall semester 2022
Course frequency Irregular
Lecturers Dorothee Bentz (dorothee.bentz@unibas.ch, Assessor)
Content Placebos have been the derogatory synonym for anything false, inert, fake, and empty, even though (or maybe because) the placebo has been marked by quite substantial and meaningful effects. Thus, placebos are considered the forbidden fruit in therapy as they transgress the ethical obligation of informed consent as much as they are tempting through their clinical powers. Interestingly, this dilemma between the ethical obligations to respect patients' autonomy and to strive for patients' beneficence can surprisingly be solved very easily as placebos also work when given openly. This not only makes yet another psychological intervention available to our and patients' service, it is furthermore illuminative for how much can be disclosed in clinical practice without losing any effects and to the benefit of the therapeutic alliance and patient's self-efficacy.
"Open-label placebo – really? From deception to appreciation" is a one-day symposium with lectures in the morning and workshops in the afternoon. The workshops will be organized as parallel workshops, thus everyone can participate in two workshops. While the lectures will introduce you to the history, the development, and the general ideas of open-label placebos as well as delve into the empirical findings of open-label placebos in clinical practice, the workshops are aimed not only to provide detailed insights into various applications of open-label placebo but also to give you hands-on experiences of how to use open-label placebo. There will also be ample opportunity to discuss the challenges and potentials of open-label placebos with experienced researchers and clinicians.

Talks and workshops will be given by Prof. Dr. Irving Kirsch (Harvard Medical School), Prof. Dr. Claudia Carvalho (ISPA Instituto Universitario), Dr. Niels Bagge (Denmark), Prof. Dr. Jens Gaab (Universität Basel), Dr. Cosima Locher (Universität Zürich), Dr. Antje Frey Nascimento, MSc Dilan Sezer, MSc Sarah Bürgler (Universität Basel).
