39575-01 - Lecture: Biology of Orchids 1 CP

Content This course offers an introduction to characteristic morphological and reproductive traits of one of the largest angiosperm plant families, the Orchidaceae. The course also covers ecological and evolutionary aspects, with a discussion on pollination mechanisms, mimicry and speciation.
Lectures will be combined with practicals and group work. In the morphology practical students will analyze and draw samples taken from the living orchid collection of the Botanical Garden of the Basel University. Group work will focus on native orchids. In a subsequent field trip, participants will visit the plants in their natural habitat to study their characteristics and discuss conservation issues.
