48616-01 - Lecture with practical courses: Scientific writing (2 CP)

Content Description: This course aims to help students improve their scientific writing skills and communicate research to different audiences (other researchers, non-specialists, etc.). Through a combination of lectures, manuscript clinics, readings and practical written exercises with peer review, the course focuses on how to write effectively, concisely and clearly, and takes students through the steps of preparing a scientific manuscript.

Participants
Designed primarily for students at the Swiss TPH, the hands-on course is most suitable for participants who have already started some research and are ready to write about their research topic.
Priority is given to Master’s students in the Swiss TPH programme. The scheduling, level, content and text types are primarily tailored towards students in the Masters programme. PhD candidates from the Swiss TPH and other students from the university are allowed to attend, space permitting.

PhDs and non-Swiss TPH Master students will be added to a waiting list, and notified before the first course date if they have a space or not.
Learning objectives Upon completion of the course, students should be able to write effectively, concisely, and clearly. They should prepare parts of an actual scientific manuscript and review peer writing.
Bibliography Articles and/or other materials will be provided for students to read as preparation for lectures, as general guidance, and as basis for discussion and review.
Comments Max 20 participants, by order of registration, priority is given to Master students of Epidemiology/Infection Biology at Swiss TPH

Assessment details - Attendance of and full participation in at least 7 lectures
- Submit and peer review four satisfactory written assignments (if an assignment is unsatisfactory, it may be resubmitted once) that are submitted in improved form as a writing portfolio.
- Read and participate actively in the discussion and review of own and other course participants’ texts
