28878-01 - Lecture with practical courses: Data Analysis in Epidemiology 3 CP

Semester spring semester 2023
Course frequency Every spring sem.
Lecturers Marek Kwiatkowski (marek.kwiatkowski@unibas.ch)
Giusi Moffa (giusi.moffa@unibas.ch)
Amanda Ross (amanda.ross@unibas.ch, Assessor)
Content Description: This course builds on the basic statistics courses of the MSc in Epidemiology. The lectures focus on practical examples, based on datasets from epidemiological studies. Exercises are designed to teach students how to carry out the major steps of an epidemiological analysis project. Regression analyses, including linear, logistic and survival models, will constitute the core of the lectures. Additional topics such as methods for clustered data or repeated measures (random effects, GEE) and other topics will also be included. All exercises will be solved using STATA, but students may use other software if they are familiar with it.
Content:
General modelling issues
Linear regression
Random effects
Logistic regression
Generalized Estimating Equations (GEE)
Survival analysis
Introduction to causal inference
Missing data
Learning objectives Students develop practical skills in conducting regression analyses and in describing and presenting their results. Based on concrete scientific questions, they can devise analysis plans and carry out the respective analyses correctly. They know strategies for model development, are familiar with methods of confounder control and know how to model and interpret effect modification.
Comments Weeks 8-15
Methods: Lectures and practicals

Admission requirements This course follows on from the courses Biostatistics and Statistical Modelling, which are part of the MSc in Epidemiology and are taught in the Autumn semester. Students need to have either attended these courses or to have a basic level of biostatistics with an idea of hypothesis testing, estimation, regression models and confounding.
Due to group work, 100% attendance is required.
Language of instruction English
Use of digital media No specific media used
