48610-01 - Lecture with practical courses: GIS in health and exposure sciences 2 CP

Semester spring semester 2023
Course frequency Every spring sem.
Lecturers Kees de Hoogh (c.dehoogh@unibas.ch, Assessor)
Marloes Eeftens (marloes.eeftens@unibas.ch)
Danielle Vienneau (danielle.vienneau@unibas.ch)
Content Overall description: In this course on GIS, students will be introduced to spatial thinking and analysis including: the role geography in environmental epidemiology; GIS data types and file management; coordinate systems and projections; working with and integrating spatial (vector and raster) data; visualisation of spatial data; thematic mapping and cartographic layout design; basic and advanced geoprocessing tools for spatial analysis.
An understanding of spatial relationships and analysis will be gained through inclass exercises on spatial data linkage, effective mapping, exposure modelling, and risk mapping and assessment. Students will apply their new skills in a mini project involving spatial analysis and presentation of maps.

Content:
QGIS software
Spatial data
Projections
Geocoding
Mapping
GPS data collection & display
Spatial analysis: proximity, interpolation, overlay
Learning objectives To gain knowledge in the fundamentals of GIS for spatial data handling and analysis. By the end of the course, students will:
Understand how GIS can be used to enhance health and exposure science research; Know how to source, convert, manipulate, visualise and map spatial data;
Understand and perform basic spatial analyses; and be able to plan, implement and effectively communicate a mini-project, demonstrating spatial understanding and basic cartography skills.
