48609-01 - Lecture with practical courses: Producing, interpreting and using evidence in health care 2 CP

Semester spring semester 2023
Course frequency Every spring sem.
Lecturers Xavier Bosch-Capblanch (x.bosch@unibas.ch, Assessor)
Content Description: Decisions made by health services users, providers, managers and policy makers determine health care outcomes. Decisions are continuously made, no matter the level of knowledge of decision makers or the amount of available resources. The soundness of decisions depends, among many other issues, on the available evidence to inform them. We critically examine the different types of evidence (from colloquial to research) and how evidence is produced, interpreted and used in decision making. Systematic reviews play a particularly prominent role in decision making and students will be guided to understand their rational, methods, results and use.

Content:
Data, information, evidence and decisions in health care
Study designs and critical appraisal
Systematic reviews (SR) - I
Systematic reviews - II
Guidelines and guidance in health care
Learning objectives To conceptualise the role of evidence in the knowledge translation cycle in the health sector, from health care practice to policy decision making; to understand the role of research synthesis (i.e. systematic reviews) as a source of evidence for decision making.
