28873-01 - Lecture with practical courses: Mathematical Modelling of Infectious Diseases 2 CP

Semester spring semester 2023
Course frequency Every spring sem.
Lecturers Nakul Chitnis (nakul.chitnis@unibas.ch)
Melissa Penny (melissa.penny@unibas.ch, Assessor)
Content Many infectious diseases are characterized by complex transmission dynamics, making it difficult to predict the effects of interventions. Mathematical models can assist in making such predictions and facilitate decision making for prevention and control.

In this course, students receive an introduction to the principles of infectious disease modeling. The lecture requires an understanding of basic calculus and it will be necessary during the course to manipulate equations and implement them in software. The course is suitable for students interested in the general principles of pathogen modeling as well as those who intend to carry out projects in this area.
Learning objectives To understand the differences between deterministic and stochastic models of transmission; the relationships between mathematical modeling and statistical analysis; and the relevance of these methods to different problems in infectious disease epidemiology. To understand the basic principles and applicability of mass action models of infectious disease transmission; the meaning of quantities measuring pathogen transmission, including the force of infection, basic reproductive number, and vectorial capacity, and their importance for disease control. To understand and learn to formulate simple compartment models and implement them in a computer package.
