Content | the course aims at familiarizing students with the broad outlines of modern and contemporary Lebanon, addressing the late Ottoman period, the formation of Great Lebanon leading up to the Lebanese Republic. Upon completion of the course, students would have acquired knowledge of: • Major sources for reconstructing the history of Lebanon, • The demographic map of Lebanese regions, • The internal and external dynamics leading to the formation of Lebanon (political formation of Lebanon and the French mandate) • The rise of a sense of Lebanism and Lebanese nationalism, • Historical dynamics and current dynamics leading up to contemporary Lebanon (current debates and questions) |
Learning objectives | • Understanding versions of Lebanese history and notions for understanding contemporary issues • Understanding of communities, sectarianism and nationalism • Improve oral communication skills through class discussion and presentation as well as writing skills |

Pluto Press, 2012. https://doi.org/10.2307/j.ctt183p4f5. ---------- Additional readings will be made available on ADAM for the different sessions. Students are expected to read them in order to have a better overview of the subject. The readings will be discussed in the session and students are expected to actively participate and share their thoughts and reflections. |
