Content | The end of the First World War in Central and Eastern Europe also culminated in the defeat and dissolution of the Ottoman, Russian and Austro-Hungarian empires. The successor nation-states, most of which were established on the ruins of these former imperial hegemons, also inherited various national and religious minorities whose rights were recognised and protected by the League of Nations (1919-1939). At the same time, Weimar Germany and the Soviet Union, which remained outside of this international network, developed their own programmes of minority protections that ran parallel, and often in contradiction, to those conceived in Geneva. Some of the key questions this seminar aims to examine include: how did the status of these various minority communities change follow the collapse of the old continental empires? What strategies for preserving their autonomy were available to them within the borders of the new nation-states in East-Central Europe? And what challenges did the new nation-states face in seeking to manage their ethnically and religiously diverse populations? |
