67620-01 - Seminar: The Archive – Theory, Practice, Transformation (3 CP)

Semester spring semester 2023
Course frequency Once only
Lecturers Lorena Rizzo (lorena.rizzo@unibas.ch, Assessor)
Content This course provides an introduction to current interdisciplinary theoretical debates on the archive, while placing a special focus on colonial archives. We also engage with how archives in Basel (and beyond) preserve, manage and curate their holdings and how they navigate tensions between demands of digitization and open access on the one hand, and a deep concern with materiality on the other hand. Finally, we discuss the reasons for which archives have increasingly come under pressure – institutionally, financially and in view of intensifying demands for decolonization – and how the challenge to archival order initiates processes of transformation towards more inclusive cultures and practices of knowledge production.
